About
Products with a reason to exist.
JABL Works is independent and based in the Netherlands. We build a small number of focused products for Shopify retail, and we build them from what happens in stores, not from a feature list.
Why we exist
Retail software is often built far away from the counter. The result: tools that impress in a demo and break on a Saturday afternoon.
We work the other way around. We watch a problem happen in a working store, build the smallest thing that solves it, run it in practice, and only then turn it into a product. That makes us slower to announce and, we think, more useful to install.
We’re not an hourly agency. We don’t sell time; we build products and take responsibility for them after launch. For a few partners we apply the same approach to one store.
Where insight comes from
Collett: our practice environment.
Collett is an independent sneaker retailer with physical stores and a webshop. Many JABL ideas started there.
It’s where we see which questions customers ask at the counter, which sizes go missing between stockroom and webshop, and which pages customers leave. Collett is not the publisher of our software, and we don’t present it as proof of results. JABL Works is the software brand; JABL Trading is the company behind it.
Validation
Four checks before anything ships.
A product that fails one goes back a step. Some ideas stop here, and that’s the point.
Seen more than once
A problem has to show up repeatedly, with different customers or staff, before we build for it.
Works in a live store
The prototype has to survive real stock, real staff and real customers.
Holds beyond one retailer
It has to make sense for stores other than Collett, with different catalogues and locations.
Explainable in one sentence
If a merchant can’t tell a colleague what it does in one sentence, it isn’t ready.
- Observe
- Prototype
- Run in practice
- Productize
Capabilities
Focused tools for complicated storefronts.
The disciplines behind every JABL product. The same ones are available for a small number of studio engagements.
Shopify product engineering
Apps built on Shopify’s own data model: products, variants, locations, metafields and metaobjects.
Retail systems and data flows
Stock, prices and locations that stay consistent between the shop floor, the stockroom and the webshop.
UX for complex commerce workflows
Interfaces for size runs, multi-store stock and merchandising: dense information, still easy to scan.
Theme app extensions and embedded admin tools
Storefront blocks merchants place themselves, and admin tools that live inside Shopify.
Interactive product storytelling
Launches and product stories built as working software: configurators, drops, explorable products.
Privacy-aware architecture
Collect the minimum, keep it in Shopify where possible, and explain in plain language what is stored.
